Metformin (Glucophage)

So when my doctor mentioned he was going to put me on Metformin I started doing a lot of research on it. I found a great sight called Natural Health Solutions For PCOS.
Heck right now I will wrap bacon around my neck and stick asparagus in my ears if he tells me that will do the trick!
The benefits for me being on this are :
1.LOWERING OF INSULIN, TESTOSTERONE, AND GLUCOSE LEVELS Which reduces acne, hirsutism, abdominal obesity, amenorrhea and other symptoms. In one study conducted at Virginia Commonwealth University, 24 obese PCOS women were given metformin or placebo. The 11 women who received the metformin experienced a reduction in insulin levels, which slowed the activity of an enzyme in the ovaries that stimulates excess production of testosterone. As a result, testosterone levels also dropped.
2.RESTORATION OF NORMAL MENSTRUAL CYCLE. A number of studies have shown that menstruation can be restored in many women with PCOS. For example, in a study at Jewish Hospital in Cincinnati, 43 women who were not having periods took Glucophage, and 39 of them resumed normal menses.
3. IMPROVED CHANCE OF PREGNANCY. A study of 48 women with PCOS and infertility was conducted at the Baylor College of Medicine. They were first given metformin and 19 of them resumed menstruating and showed indications of ovulation. But 10 required clomid (a fertility drug) in addition to metformin in order to show evidence of ovulation. Twenty women of the 48 (42%) became pregnant.
4.REDUCED RISK OF MISCARRIAGE Another aspect of PCOS-related infertility is the tendency for repeated miscarriages. A study from the Hospital de Clinicas Caracas in Venezuela looked at 65 women who received Glucophage during their pregnancies vs. 31 who did not. The early pregnancy (first trimester) loss rate in the metformin group was 8.8% as compared to a 41.9% loss in the untreated group. Of those women who previously had miscarried, 11.1% of the metformin group miscarried again, while 58.3% of the untreated group again miscarried
5. WEIGHT LOSS AND OTHER BENEFITS. Metformin may contribute to weight loss in some diabetics.(11) However, weight loss does not appear to be one of its primary benefits. Glucophage may also be of some value improving success with in vitro fertilization, lowering cholesterol, and improving energy.

TMI

Oh I just wanted to say that AF is being a real Biotch!
1. She is being really nasty to my clothes
2 She is costing me a fortune in Kotex (46 and still counting)
3.She isn't doing the laundry!
All I have to say is damn I didn't realize how much lining can build in 4 months! If this really is 4 months? Could it be because I am not shedding enough of my lining when I do normally get AF? When I was in highschool I remember getting AF for at least a week and tons of lining. Now I get it (when it decides to arrive) for maybe 4 days and not alot of that stuff.
Well all I have to say is my uterous is going to be squeaky clean when this is over! This could be the month people!

Next Step!

So I called my OBGYN today as instructed to after getting AF (induced by taking Provera 10 days). First the receptionist told me that she knew nothing about me having to call him...so she told me to call him back tomorrow because today was a Jewish holiday and he wasn't in. But usually the nurse practitioner will talk to me so I asked if I could talk to her. She sighed and said ok. So she got on the phone and I filled her in and she got my file and there it was written: after period starts, next step Metformin. So she said after he calls to "checked in" today she would call me back to make sure if it was OK to just call in the prescription for me.
I just got off the phone and I shall be picking it up tonight! I am sooooo happy I don't have to go in! I will be picking up a months supply (not sure how much my dose is but I know I have to take it twice a day) and I have refills till my next papsmear in July '06. So please pray for me that this is what we needed and we will get a BFP on Metformin! I am hoping this is our miracle drug!
On the down side I was told I may get upset stomach and have diahrea problems! YAY!

The Weak One

So Aunt Flo has arrived. She gave me much cramping yesterday to let me believe she was on her way! Yes, she came knocking on my door in the middle of the night and boy what an entrance! She came with a vengance! I am not sure if she isn't being kind because of Provera or if it's because she hasn't been invited since the end of May....but she sure is giving me a pain about it!
When I woke up this morning I dosed myself with some pain killers and away we went to church! All through church I was ok. Then in the middle of Sunday school they wore off and that sucked! I just wanted to lay on the floor in the fetal position and cry. I havn't had these kind of cramps in soooo long! So after that I got some more pain relieving drugs and I was fine for our Adopt-A- Highway excursion. That my friends was a very nice time! I think I might have burned in the sun a tad bit...but heck why not get some rays before the white ghost arrives for winter!
So anywho when I got home Kaila, Dave and I worked on her Seed Science project. It looks cool! Afterwards we (Kaila and I, while daddy is at hockey) watched her 3D Barbie Pegasus movie.
I have probably drank a gallon of water today..I have myself believing that if you drink alot of water when Aunt Flo is in town it will go away faster. Hey one can hope!
So as instructed by my OBGYN when he prescribed the Provera (call when AF arrives) I am calling him on Tuesday. I am hoping he just tells me he is calling in my prescription and not making me come in. I don't think I will be that lucky this time though. I don't know why they need you to come in for them to say: "Hey I am putting you on this and this is how you take it," and then you are on your merry way. It's silly because when I am on something new I have to get a conciltation at the pharmacist anyway.....ah well he has to make up for not making me come in before Provera I guess. So hopefully I can get in on Wednesday for this brief encounter and I will be on Metformin maybe as soon as this week if that's how it works? Now I am off to enjoy the couch
